“How often should I really deep clean?” is the question our crews hear most, from Detroit condos to Grand Rapids family homes. The honest answer: most professional cleaners recommend a full deep clean every 3–6 months — but in Michigan, humidity, long winters, and pollen-heavy summers mean some rooms need attention far more often than others. Here’s the room-by-room schedule we use with our own clients.

The short answer: 2–4 deep cleans per year

For an average household, plan on a whole-home deep clean at least twice a year, and ideally once per season. If you have pets, kids, or a high-traffic home, bump high-use areas to every 3–4 months. Regular standard cleaning in between keeps surfaces fresh, but it doesn’t reach the grease, buildup, baseboards, and behind-appliance zones that a deep clean resets.

Kitchen: every 2–3 months

The kitchen works harder than any other room. Every 2–3 months, deep clean the oven, range hood, refrigerator (inside and coils), and behind appliances where grease and crumbs collect. Degreasing cabinet fronts and descaling the sink and faucet also belong on this rotation. If you cook daily, don’t stretch this past three months — baked-on grease only gets harder to remove.

Bathrooms: every 2–4 months

Every 3–4 months is the baseline; make it every 2 months if several people share one bathroom or ventilation is poor. Michigan’s humid summers accelerate soap scum, mineral deposits, and mildew in grout lines, so mid-summer is a smart time for a bathroom-focused deep clean. Between visits, a quick squeegee of shower glass after use dramatically slows buildup.

Living areas and bedrooms: every 3–6 months

Carpets, curtains, and upholstery are allergen traps — they hold onto the pollen and dust that Great Lakes humidity keeps circulating all summer. Deep clean living rooms every 3–6 months: vacuum under furniture, wash or steam soft surfaces, and hit the spots dusting misses — ceiling fans, window tracks, vents, and baseboards. Guest rooms and storage areas can wait longer; once or twice a year is usually enough.

The Michigan factor: humidity, basements, and seasons

Michigan homes face a few extras. Indoor humidity above 50% lets dust mites surge and mold gain a foothold — especially in basements, bathrooms, and around windows — so summer deep cleans should include those zones. Spring deep cleans clear out the salt, grit, and closed-window staleness of winter; fall deep cleans prepare the house before it’s sealed up again. If anyone in your home has seasonal allergies, more frequent deep cleaning of soft surfaces makes a noticeable difference in air quality.

When to deep clean regardless of the calendar

Some moments call for a deep clean no matter when the last one happened: moving in or out of a home (see our move-out cleaning checklist for Michigan renters), after a renovation, before hosting a big event, after an illness runs through the house, or when a new pet joins the family.

A rhythm that actually works

Rather than one exhausting marathon weekend, many of our clients rotate: kitchen this month, bathrooms next, living areas the month after. Others pair recurring standard cleaning with a professional deep clean every 1–2 months for high-traffic households. Either way, consistency beats intensity — a home that’s deep cleaned on a schedule never gets the chance to build up the grime that makes deep cleaning dreaded in the first place.
