- Dust ceiling fans, vents, and light fixtures before you touch the floors.
- Wipe baseboards, door frames, switch plates, and outlet covers.
- Clean window interiors, sills, and tracks — window tracks are a classic walkthrough checkpoint.
- Remove nails or hooks only if your lease requires it; in Michigan, small nail holes generally count as normal wear and tear.
- Vacuum closets, shelves, and corners, then finish with floors: vacuum carpets and mop hard surfaces.
Don’t skip these
- Sweep the balcony, porch, or garage and remove every item you own. Left-behind furniture or trash is a guaranteed deduction.
- Replace burned-out bulbs and dead smoke-detector batteries.
- Photograph every room after cleaning, with timestamps. Michigan landlords must itemize deductions, and your photos are the counter-evidence.

Done properly, a full move-out clean takes most renters six to ten hours.
