The remodel is finished. The contractor has hauled out the last of the debris, shaken your hand, and driven off. You walk through the house and it looks close to done — until the afternoon light hits a windowsill and you realize there is a fine grey film on absolutely everything, including rooms the crew never entered.

That is the moment most Michigan homeowners call us. Here is what post-renovation cleaning actually involves, and why it is a different job from a standard clean or even a deep clean.

Construction dust behaves nothing like household dust

Ordinary house dust is mostly fabric fibers and skin cells. It is heavy, it falls, and a vacuum handles it. Construction dust is a different material: fine drywall gypsum, silica from cut tile and concrete, sawdust, and joint compound powder, ground to a particle size small enough to stay airborne for a day or two after the tools go quiet.

Two consequences follow. First, it travels — through door gaps, along hallways, and straight into your HVAC returns, which is how a kitchen remodel ends up dusting a bedroom on the other side of the house. Second, a standard household vacuum can push it right back into the air through the exhaust. Post-renovation work needs HEPA filtration and a wet-wipe method, not dry dusting that just relocates the problem.

Wait for the dust to settle — literally

The most common scheduling mistake is booking the clean for the same afternoon the crew finishes. Airborne particles are still coming down at that point, and you will pay for a clean that gets re-dusted overnight.

Give it 24 to 48 hours after the last dust-generating work. Run the HVAC fan during that window if the weather allows, then change the furnace filter immediately before we arrive — otherwise the system reintroduces everything it caught. If your project ran in phases, a light interim clean between phases and one thorough final clean at the end is usually more economical than repeated full cleans.

What a post-renovation clean covers

The list runs longer than a deep clean because the residue types are different. Expect a crew to work through:

Michigan winter remodels need an extra pass

Renovation season here does not stop when the temperature drops — interior projects tend to pick up from October onward, and that is exactly when the house is sealed shut. No open windows, no cross-ventilation, and the furnace running on a closed loop means construction dust has nowhere to go except into your ductwork and back out through every register.

If your project runs through winter, plan on a fresh furnace filter before the clean and a second one a week later. Add road salt and slush tracked in by the crew all day, and the entryway and traffic path usually need attention well beyond a normal clean.

What cleaning cannot fix

Worth naming plainly, because it saves an awkward conversation later. Drywall dings, paint drips that have fully cured onto trim, scratched flooring, misaligned hardware, caulk gaps, and unfinished touch-up painting are punch-list items for your contractor, not cleaning problems. Walk the job with your contractor and get the punch list closed before the final clean — otherwise their return visit re-dusts the work you just paid for.

Scope and cost

Post-renovation cleaning is priced above a standard clean because it takes more hours, more passes, and specialized equipment. Nationally, homeowners commonly land in the mid-hundreds for a residential post-renovation clean, though the real drivers are square footage, how many rooms the dust reached, and whether new tile and glass need haze and film removal.
