The most common question we get from first-time clients is some version of: do I need to clean before you get here?

No. You do not, and you should not. But there is a difference between cleaning and preparing, and the second one genuinely changes what you get for your money. Fifteen minutes of prep typically saves a two-person team thirty to forty-five minutes of tidying — which, on a standard visit, is close to an extra room cleaned properly. Here is what that prep actually looks like.

Clear surfaces, not dirt

Our team can clean anything. What we cannot do is clean under your belongings without making decisions about where your things go — and guessing where your mail, your kids’ homework, or your medication belongs is not something any cleaner should be doing.

So before the visit: clothes off the floor and into hampers, dishes into the dishwasher or sink, toys into bins, papers off the kitchen counter and dining table, and anything sitting on the stairs moved. That is the whole job. Leave the grime, the soap scum, the dust, and the floors alone — that is what you are paying for.

Put away valuables and fragile items

Sparkle Pro Cleaning is a bonded and insured team, and that coverage exists for a reason. It is still simply easier for everyone if jewelry, cash, heirloom glassware, and anything genuinely irreplaceable is put away before a visit. It is not about trust. It is about not asking someone to dust around a piece of your grandmother’s china.

The same goes for anything unstable: a wobbly shelf, a picture frame that does not sit right, a top-heavy lamp. Tell us, or move it.

Decide where the pets will be

This one gets skipped constantly and it matters more than people expect. An anxious dog following a crew from room to room slows the visit down, and vacuum cords and buckets are a real hazard for a cat that darts. Crate, a closed bedroom, the yard, or a walk with a neighbor — any of these work. Just decide in advance rather than at the door.

If your pet has product sensitivities, mention it when you book. We use EPA-certified, eco-friendly products throughout, which is exactly why pet owners tend to find us in the first place — but there is more to know, and we covered it in our pet-safe cleaning products guide.

Sort out access and parking

Practical, and in Michigan, seasonal. How does the team get in — are you home, is there a lockbox, a code, a key with a neighbor? Where do we park, and is there a driveway or street restriction we should know about? In winter, is the walk shoveled and salted? A crew carrying equipment across an unsalted walk in January is a genuine safety issue, and it is the one thing we cannot solve from our end.

Also worth flagging: alarm systems, a doorbell that does not work, a gate latch that sticks, and any room you would rather we skip entirely. “Do not go in the office” is a completely normal instruction.

Leave a note about products and surfaces

If you have unsealed natural stone, a specific hardwood finish, hand-painted tile, or an allergy in the household, leave the product you want used out on the counter with a short note saying where it goes. We would rather follow your instruction than make a judgment call on a surface we are seeing for the first time.

Expect the first visit to take longer

This surprises people. A first visit almost always runs longer than the visits that follow, because we are removing accumulated buildup — baseboards, ceiling fans, window tracks, grout, behind appliances — rather than maintaining an already-clean baseline. For a lot of Michigan homes that means the first appointment is best booked as a deep clean and every visit after as a standard clean. If you are unsure which you need, our guide on how often to book a cleaning service walks through it.

Do a five-minute walkthrough

If you can be home for the first visit, walk the house with the team lead before they start. Point out your priorities — most households have two or three rooms that matter far more than the rest — and name anything you are particular about. Five minutes here prevents the much more awkward conversation afterward.

And afterward, say what you thought. Good cleaning services keep notes on every client. The visits get better because you told us something, not because we guessed correctly.
