Search “cleaning service near me” anywhere in Michigan and you will get dozens of results that all say the same four things: professional, reliable, bonded, insured. The words are free. What separates a company that shows up on time for two years from one that ghosts you in month three is what happens when you ask specific questions before booking.
Here are the ten questions we think every Michigan homeowner and office manager should ask — including what a good answer actually sounds like.
1. Are you bonded and insured — and can I see the certificate?
Anyone can type “bonded and insured” on a website. The follow-up is the real test: ask for a certificate of insurance. A legitimate company will send one without hesitation, usually the same day. General liability coverage protects you if something in your home is damaged; a bond covers theft. If a company hedges, changes the subject, or tells you their cleaners carry “their own” coverage, keep looking.
2. Are your cleaners employees or independent contractors?
This matters more than most people realize. With a true employee model, the company handles payroll taxes, workers’ compensation, and training. With a contractor or app-based marketplace model, you may be the one exposed if someone is injured in your home. Ask directly, and ask who is liable if a cleaner is hurt on your property.
3. Do you background-check every person who enters my property?
Most Michigan clients are not home during the clean — they leave a key or a door code. That only works if you trust the screening process. Ask whether checks are run on every cleaner, how often they are refreshed, and whether the same team returns each visit. Consistency is a security feature, not just a convenience.
4. What products do you use, and are they safe around kids and pets?
“Green” is a marketing word with no legal definition. “EPA-certified” is not. Ask for specifics: what goes on the countertops, what goes in the bathroom, and what happens if someone in the household has asthma or a fragrance sensitivity. At Sparkle Pro Cleaning we use EPA-certified, eco-friendly products across every service, and we will swap in something different if you have a specific sensitivity — you only have to tell us once.
5. What exactly is included — and what is not?
This is where most disappointment comes from. A standard cleaning and a deep cleaning are different services at different prices, and the gap between them is usually baseboards, interior appliances, window tracks, grout, and behind-furniture work. Ask for a written checklist before the first visit. If a company cannot produce one, the scope will be improvised every time — and it will shrink.
6. How do you price — flat rate, hourly, or per square foot?
All three models are legitimate. What is not legitimate is a quote that changes after the crew arrives. Hourly pricing should come with an estimated range. Flat-rate pricing should be tied to square footage and condition. For offices, per-square-foot pricing is standard. Whatever the model, get the number in writing and ask what would cause it to change.
7. What is your satisfaction guarantee, and what is the window?
A guarantee with no timeframe is not a guarantee. Ask how long you have to report a problem and what the remedy is. Ours is straightforward: if something does not meet your expectations, contact us within 24 hours and we return to re-clean the area at no additional charge.
8. Do you bring your own supplies and equipment?
Most established companies do. Some budget services expect you to stock everything, which quietly moves cost back onto you. Also worth asking: do they use color-coded or separate cloths for bathrooms and kitchens? Cross-contamination between those two rooms is one of the clearest signals of an untrained crew.
9. What happens if my regular cleaner is sick or on vacation?
Solo operators are often excellent, but they have no backup. If you are running a Michigan office that needs nightly janitorial service, or you have a recurring home schedule you depend on, ask what the coverage plan is. A team-based company can send a trained replacement who already has your checklist.
10. What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?
Michigan winters make this practical, not theoretical. Snow days, school closures, and travel happen. Ask how much notice is required, whether there is a fee, and how easy it is to shift a visit by a day. A company with rigid policies and a hard cancellation fee is telling you something about how flexible the relationship will be.
Two more things worth checking
Read the reviews with an eye for pattern, not score. One bad review means nothing; five reviews mentioning the same missed rooms mean something. And check whether the company actually serves your city. Plenty of listings that appear in a Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor search are run out of a call center three states away that subcontracts the work locally. Ask where the crew is based.
