It is the middle of September. The thought of Thanksgiving place settings is still a long way off. But if you are planning to host this year — in-laws in the guest room, fourteen people around a table, a company open house — the cleaning calendar is already the part of the plan most likely to go sideways.
Every cleaning company in Michigan sees the same thing: search interest in holiday cleaning services climbs through November and peaks in the ten days before Thanksgiving and again before Christmas. By then the weekend and pre-holiday slots are gone. The people who get the time they want booked it in October.
The three-stage holiday cleaning timeline
Hosting well is not one clean. It is three, and they do different jobs.
Stage one — the reset, 4 to 6 weeks out. This is the deep clean: baseboards, inside the oven and refrigerator, behind and under appliances, light fixtures, window tracks, grout, and the guest room nobody has opened since August. It is the heavy lift, and it is the one you want done early — not the week of, when you are also cooking.
Stage two — the pre-guest clean, 2 to 4 days out. Shorter and surface-focused: floors, bathrooms, kitchen, glass, dusting, and high-touch points. The house is already deep-cleaned underneath, so this pass is about presentation on the day.
Stage three — post-party, the day after. Kitchen recovery, carpet and upholstery spots, sticky floors, bathrooms that hosted thirty strangers, and the trash volume nobody budgets for. This is the clean people skip and then regret at 11pm.
Not every household needs all three. If you are hosting once, stage one plus stage three usually covers it. If you have guests staying a week, all three earn their place.
What Michigan adds to the list
Holiday cleaning here is not the same job it is in a mild climate, and the differences are worth planning around.
- Salt and slush. From late November on, every guest brings road salt in on their shoes. Salt is abrasive and it leaves white crystalline staining on hardwood and carpet that gets harder to lift the longer it sits. A protected entryway, a real boot tray, and a same-week clean of the traffic path matter more than anything else on this list.
- Furnace dust. The first hard run of the season blows a season’s worth of duct dust across every surface you just cleaned. Change the filter before the deep clean, not after, and run the fan for a day in between.
- Sealed windows. No cross-ventilation from November to March means cooking grease, candle soot, and fireplace residue accumulate on walls and window glass instead of airing out. Kitchen walls and cabinet fronts genuinely need a wipe-down before company.
- The dormant guest room. A closed bedroom collects dust on every horizontal surface, and the linens in it have been sitting since summer. Mattress, headboard, closet shelf, ceiling fan, and window track — all of it.
- Dining room you never use. The formal dining room in most Michigan homes sees three meals a year. Chair rails, chandelier, table leaves, and the china cabinet all need attention that a routine clean skips.
If you are hosting overnight guests
Two things move the needle more than anything else, and both are easy to overlook: the guest bathroom and the guest room closet. Descale the showerhead and glass, clean the exhaust fan cover, and empty enough closet space that your guests can actually unpack. A clean bathroom and somewhere to hang a coat is most of what people remember.
For businesses hosting a holiday event
Office parties and client open houses have their own rhythm. Book the pre-event clean for the evening before, not the morning of, and schedule the post-event clean before you send the invitations — mid-December is the single tightest window of the year for commercial crews. If you already run daily janitorial service, ask about adding a one-off event pass rather than rearranging the standing schedule.
