Late August in Michigan is a collision of two things: the school year starting, and ragweed season ramping up. Ragweed begins releasing pollen in early August across the state and stays active from late August through early October, ending only at the first hard frost. That lands squarely on the weeks when kids are back indoors, backpacks are hitting the floor, and everyone is spending more time in shared rooms again.

A summer’s worth of open windows, screen doors, lake trips, and sandals has already tracked pollen, dust, and grit into the house. Cleaning it out now — before the sniffling starts — is the single most practical thing a Michigan household can do in the last week of August.

Start with the entryway

Pollen and outdoor dust arrive on shoes and bags. Vacuum entry mats on both sides, wash them if they are machine-safe, and wipe down the baseboards and door frames near the door — pollen settles on horizontal ledges you never look at. Set up a shoes-off spot with a bin for backpacks and sports bags so the day’s pollen stops at the door instead of migrating to the couch.

Bedrooms come before living rooms

Your kids spend eight to ten hours a night in one room, so that is where allergen reduction pays off most. Wash bedding in hot water, including pillow protectors and the mattress pad. Wipe down headboards, nightstands, window sills, and blinds — not just the visible surfaces but the tops of door frames and the tops of dressers where dust builds unnoticed.

Vacuum under the bed, not just around it. If there are stuffed animals, run the washable ones through a hot cycle. Then close the windows on high-pollen days and let the HVAC filter do the work instead.

Handle the soft surfaces

Carpets, upholstery, and curtains hold onto pollen, pet dander, and dust mites far longer than hard floors do. Vacuum carpets slowly and in two directions — speed is what most people get wrong. Vacuum upholstery seams and under cushions. Curtains and fabric blinds should be washed or at minimum vacuumed with a brush attachment; they sit right at the window where pollen comes in.

Reset the kitchen for a school-year rhythm

School mornings run on the kitchen. Clear and wipe the fridge shelves and drawers, toss what expired over summer, and degrease the range hood and stovetop — grease film traps airborne dust. Sanitize lunchbox containers and water bottles, including the lid gaskets where mildew hides. Wipe cabinet fronts around handles, which are among the highest-touch surfaces in the house.

Don’t skip the air path

Change the furnace or HVAC filter now and mark the next change date on the calendar. Vacuum the supply and return vent covers. Wipe ceiling fan blades — they redistribute everything sitting on top of them the moment you turn them on. Michigan basements can add humidity and mold spores to the mix, so run a dehumidifier and clean its reservoir while you are at it.

Bathrooms and high-touch surfaces

Once school starts, everything that circulates in a classroom comes home. Disinfect light switches, doorknobs, faucet handles, toilet flush levers, remote controls, and stair railings. Replace hand towels with fresh ones and keep a spare set within reach so they get swapped often. Descale showerheads and clean the tub or shower drain while you are in there.

What to keep up weekly

When it’s worth bringing in a professional

A full back-to-school reset is a deep clean, not a standard tidy — baseboards, blinds, vents, under furniture, inside appliances. If your late-August calendar is already full of registration nights, sports practices, and supply runs, a one-time deep clean is the efficient move. Many families follow it with recurring standard cleaning every two or four weeks to hold the line through the school year.
